2-pin vs MMCX: IEM cables explained

A detachable cable is one of the best things about IEMs: when it breaks, you replace the cable, not the earphones. But there are two main connector types, and a few variants, so check yours before you order.

Fig. 1 A 0.78 mm 2-pin plug pushes straight in. An MMCX plug snaps onto a round coaxial socket and can rotate.

Short answer

0.78 mm 2-pin uses two straight pins that push into the shell. It is the standard on most budget and enthusiast sets (Moondrop, Truthear, 7Hz, Simgot). MMCX is a round snap-on connector that can rotate, used by Shure and Sennheiser among others. Neither sounds better. Buy cables and Bluetooth adapters that match your socket, including recessed vs flush 2-pin and KZ’s 0.75 mm pins.

Examples from the spec sources on this site: the Moondrop Chu II, Truthear Zero:Red and Letshuoer S12 Pro use 0.78 mm 2-pin; the Shure SE215 and Sennheiser IE 200 use MMCX; the KZ ZS10 Pro uses KZ’s 0.75 mm 2-pin.

Swapping a cable safely

  1. Note the polarity

Many 2-pin plugs have a dot or colored mark that should match a mark on the shell. MMCX has no polarity.

  2. Pull straight, by the plug

Grip the plug housing and pull straight out. Wiggling a 2-pin plug sideways can loosen the socket.

  3. Check left and right

Match L and R on the cable to the shells; over-ear guides only bend one way.

  4. Push in fully

Seat 2-pin plugs straight until flush. Press MMCX plugs until they click.

On wireless adapters: the FiiO UTWS5 comes in separate 2-pin and MMCX versions, and reviewers note that its flat 2-pin connector may not fit recessed sockets (Audio46, SoundGuys). Check your socket before you buy.

Does a pricier cable change the sound?

For typical IEMs, the cable’s job is to be durable, comfortable and the right connector. Upgrades worth paying for: a mic, a balanced 4.4 mm plug if your source has one, better ear guides, less cable noise. Claims beyond that are maker claims.

Questions people ask

Which is better, 2-pin or MMCX?

Neither sounds better. 2-pin is simple and common on budget and enthusiast IEMs. MMCX snaps in and rotates, which some users like for over-ear routing, but its snap can wear with many swaps. Match the cable to your IEM.

How do I tell which connector my IEM has?

Look where the cable meets the shell. Two small round holes side by side mean 2-pin. A single round socket with a center pin means MMCX. The product listing usually says too.

Do KZ cables fit other 2-pin IEMs?

KZ uses its own 0.75 mm pin size on many models, slightly thinner than the common 0.78 mm. Cross-fitting can work but may be loose or tight, so buy cables listed for your model.

What is a recessed 2-pin socket?

Some IEMs sink the 2-pin socket into the shell. Cables with a flat plug may not reach or seal properly. Reviewers have noted this with some Bluetooth adapters such as the FiiO UTWS5 2-pin version.

Can I make wired IEMs wireless?

Yes, with a Bluetooth adapter that matches your connector, sold in 2-pin and MMCX versions. Expect some added latency, so they suit music and video better than live stage monitoring.
